The Wombats

So here's one of those favourite bands I mentioned but hadn't shared yet. That's all.

Morrissey

I had to chase my dad around the house with my phone playing this song today because he said he hated Morrissey and The Smiths were bearable. Sorry I just felt the need to vent that out here.
Can't get the original on my phone so it's a demo. Still good though.

Johnny Cash

God, fate or whatever you wanna call it has been sending me signs and telling me "Lola, you've forgotten about Johnny Cash"
His version of Hurt came on the radio yesterday, and just as it always does it nearly made me cry. Everything about that song is so emotional but because it's not an obviously "emo" song when you listen block out everything but his voice and the lyrics it's so powerful. Then when I got home I saw this on Instagram.

And today I walked into a shop and while I was in the queue to pay Walk the Line came on and I had to dance. Luckily I was with a friend so it was a bit more socially acceptable so I'll take this as a sign that now I must honour Johnny Cash. Took me ages to pick a song and I suggest you listen to all the ones I mentioned including this.
Now get up and dance. You know you want to.

Bowie

So I got a few treats from the Bowie exhibition at the V&A, it's really good and I recommend you get there in the morning and get tickets if you're in London. You'll probably queue for a bit longer than you'd like but it's bearable an it's worth it!
Been playing Starman basically all day from the songbook. Guess what today's song is…

DADALADAAA

Another late night/early morning post. I was watching a really good film, The Angels Share. The actors are amazing, the story is great, it ticks all the boxes. I heard it was good but damn I wasn't expecting to like it this much. One of the songs from the soundtrack, screw you if you don't like this song. Can't help but smile and sing along.
Also I posted something a couple of days ago when there was no post because it didn't work so I tried reposting today… hoping it works today

Legends

Ok so I know technically I forgot to post but I'm not asleep an in other countries it's still the 26th of July so I'm gonna count this as a post on Friday. Anyway it was both Mick Jagger's and Roger Taylor's, both members of legendary bands I love, birthdays so I'm posting a Queen song purely because I've already posted a Rolling Stones one but not Queen.

Two in One

Today marks two huge days, the first is 22 years of Oasis and the second is two years since the death of Amy Winehouse. I couldn't choose whose song I wanted to post today so here's both. The first is one of Amy's many sad songs as we mourn the death of an extremely talented but troubled singer, but the second... well, the second is Live Forever. I think you get it.

Is This It?

Today's song is purely because I've lost count of how many times I've listened to this album today, it's got happy summery tunes, with great electric guitars but not too hardcore so you can just about chill and resist the urge to headbang, and the songwriting is great. I think people, including myself, have forgotten The Strokes a bit which is not cool.

Blurred Lines

Sorry for not posting yesterday, I had a great idea about what I wanted to post and I was doing nothing all day so I'm quite annoyed at myself for not posting. But what I wanted to post was Vampire Weekend, awesome band, covering Blurred Lines, very popular song. It sounds really good, basically!

Candy

Basically, today's song is completely unrelated to today. I had a great, relaxing day to kick off the summer holidays, and here's a song by one of my all-time favourite artists. Enjoy.

Summer

SUMMER HOLIDAYS HAVE OFFICIALLY BEGUN! For me anyway... Happy for school to be over. Excited to go on summer holidays.  Hope you're all having a fun summer... Or winter, actually if you happen to be down under somewhere.
Anyway, here's today's song. For obvious reasons again.

Sport

Aah, sports day. Familiar to anyone who went to school in England. Nobody cares or likes it, but the end of the school year would be so weird without it. For obvious reasons, here's Run Baby Run. Slightly different style to what I usually post... What you say?

AMANDA Norgaard

It has occured to me that this blog is still missing songs from some other favourite bands of mine. Here's one I saw live in May, the music and performance was great. Here's one you might know... Hope you enjoy!

Still Sunny

The sun doesn't seem to be leaving the UK yet, even after a whole week which is really unusual as we usually go through all four seasons in a day.
And because the sun is still around I will continue posting summery songs. This is one which you need to listen to in the garden, on the porch, sunbathing or anywhere outside in the sun with your feet up and preferably while eating an ice cream. Trust me, it's the perfect combination for being lazy in the sun.

RIP

I know a lot of you probably won't like Glee, but it's my guilty pleasure and today one of it's best stars passed away. So I'm going to pay my respects to Cory Monteith, a talented actor with a great voice by posting the first song he sang on Glee. Rest in peace, all my love to his family, friends and loved ones.
On a lighter note I've also made a Soundcloud account, I'm loving it because you can listen to some really good singers and songwriters on there, I think you should try out this app if you want some new music. Found a great band as well via twitter called State of the Art that are on Soundcloud and I really recommend you check them out here.
I will also be posting my covers of a few songs, if you're interested you can find them here. I only have a couple so far but I should be doing a few more soon. Let me know what you think.

I'm Back!

Your favourite blogger is back! No? Well, then. This is awkward.
But I'm back, there was no WiFi where we were staying in Italy but it was a great trip. Your average trip with a load of friends but better, and sunnier. Discovered that if you are a) bored b) sad c) full of extra energy d) feeling summery and happy or just really want to dance around in your room with friends (or alone, whatever I won't judge) this is the song you need to put on. Really loudly. And dance. Feeling good?? Thought so.

Road Trippin'

I am pleased to announce that I have decided that the best album to listen to whilst relaxing in the sun is Californication.
I am not so pleased to announce that I probably won't post until next Saturday, maybe tomorrow but for the following week it all depends on the availability of WiFi because I'm off Road Trippin' to Italy. Hey isn't that from Californication? SeewhatIdidthereseewhatIdidthere?? Anyway I leave you with Road Trippin' and wish me luck that I find WiFi.

USA

Happy Independence Day to everyone celebrating in the States! Hope you're having a great time.
This is basically the first song that came to mind when thinking about USA and stuff and I haven't listened to it in years.
BOOOOOOOOOORN IN THE USAAA

Fingers Crossed

As y'all know I'm a massive Arctic Monkeys fan and they have a UK tour soon, which I can't see in London because I have tickets to see Jake Bugg on the same day but am planning to go and see them in Birmingham, which is just fine AS LONG AS I GET TICKETS BECAUSE THE PRESALE IS ALREADY SOLD OUT so I need all of you to cross your fingers and hope for me that I get what I want...

Cover

Today, my good friends, I would like to share with you one of my favourite things: watching covers. I love it when bands I love do covers of songs, especially when they make songs I really don't like sound really good. Mostly these covers are done on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge so I recommend checking out their channel on YouTube for some great covers. There's so many covers I could choose and I'll probably resort to posting them on this blog but here is probably my personal favourite, probably because the original song really annoys me but I can never get enough of the music and Ben Howard's voice in his version.
That's right. Ben Howard covered Call Me Maybe. And it was awesome. At least I think so.

Monday

It's Monday. Meaning I'm very tired, uninspired and can't wait for it to be Friday. Here's the most upbeat song The Cure ever sang to cheer me up. Friday I'm in love... Nobody in particular. Just the weekend.

Thats All Folks

Today's Glastonbury headliners were Mumford & Sons, but now Glasto is over until next year. Enjoyed it, this year is pretty much unbeatable.
Now here's my favourite Mumford song.

Mardy Bum

I know you've probably all seen it by now but I just have to make sure. Here's Arctic Monkeys' Mardy Bum from last night's Glastonbury performance.

Something that's come up quite a lot is why Alex Turner has gone Elvis instead of Sheffield, so before anyone makes a big deal here's his explanation.
Looking forward to a Rolling Stones party tonight!

Glastonbury

I don't have a song to post today because I've had no time, I was watching Glastonbury. Not live but on TV. Lots of really good performances, Dizzie Rascal, Rizzle Kicks and Bastille were all surprisingly good, but of course Arctic Monkeys were amazing. Got really excited, my expectations were high and of course they did not disappoint. Live streaming was available outside the UK and I'm sure it will all be on YouTube sooner or later. And when that happens the first thing I will post is the mind-blowing Mardy Bum. Don't want to give it away if you haven't seen it but oh my Alex Turner was it bloody excellent. Hopefully I'll see you tomorrow with a song.

Wadiya

Just watched The Dictator for the third time today. I love Sacha Baron Cohen, he makes these huge statements about politics so hilariously. Anyway, I think what they did with the soundtrack in that film is amazing. They basically used appropriate songs that everyone would recognise but "translated" them into some Middle-Eastern like language which I'm not even sure is an actual language but the Wadiyan version of Everybody Hurts amused me. Maybe more than most people. But here's the original song.

Music Video

Today I'm willing to humiliate myself for your entertainment, because I love you for reading this blog. My four friends and I got an award for a music video we made a few months ago to Biffy Clyro's Many of Horror. Feel free to not watch the video and just listen to the perfect song, but I'm putting it out there because it's the reason for today's song and to show off the editing that won us "Best Editing Award."

Love Today

Sorry I didn't post a song yesterday, but I'll make up for it again today.
Yesterday I had a great day. School, as it probably is for most of you, was a mixture of watching "educational videos" and "here's some stuff to do with this subject, now do what you want," because it's almost the end of the year. So here's a nice happy clappy pop tune for you.
And to make up for not posting, here's a great video, especially for the Miles Kane/Alex Turner bromance fans. And to channel my positive vibes unto thee. I CAN'T FIND IT AGAIN IN THE BLOGGER THING SO HERE'S THE LINK AND CLICK ON IT, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT (MILEX FANS I'M TALKING TO YOU).

Bonehead

This blog is slowly turning into a "happy birthday to whoever's birthday it is today" blog so I'll try to minimise the happy birthdays to singers and band members unless it's someone SUPER important, like the one and only Bonehead of Oasis. Happy birthday you legend, thanks for the music.
On the Definitely Maybe Live DVD he says Columbia is his favourite Oasis song to play, so here it is. Enjoy.

Florence Welch - Unplugged

Upon realising that I haven't posted any of Flo's music yet I decided to post this for today's song, one which you probably all know but I just love this version. She's perfect live, even with very little instrumental support and I think the harp just makes this song completely flawless. Hope you love it as much as I do.

Happy Birthday Lana

 Hello!
Today I have to wish Lana Del Rey a happy birthday. Personally, I don't like her music for many reasons but I'm not going to insult anyone's taste in music by going into that.
I'm going to wish Lana a happy birthday using a cover sung by one of her biggest fans and my best friends who's incidentally a great singer, amazing guitarist and all-round musician. I tried to get her cover of Million Dollar Man but I can't find it when I search in the Blogger "insert a video" search thingy. So here's Pumped Up Kicks, with a pro music video and all.

And I've fixed yesterday's post, so the video is embedded and it looks all proper like.

Crawling Back to You

So I was lacking inspiration for today's song but this came out yesterday and I love it so need to share it with you.
It does sound a lot like R U Mine? which I also love. The bass riff is really rock n roll and very catchy, Alex's lyrics have yet to disappoint and I love the band's backing vocals going do i waaanna know? also like in R U Mine. And the video has blown my mind.
Basically, I'm now even more psyched for the album.

And a UK tour, please? Preferably slightly cheaper than Glastonbury??

Beatles & Stones

Hello!
I know I didn't post yesterday and that's the second time that's happened, which considering this is a new blog is not okay. So you get two songs today, you lucky thing!
As it was Paul McCartney's birthday yesterday, it's kind of a given that the first song has to be a Beatles song. Although I love John Lennon the most, I have to give it to Macca for writing and singing this beautiful song.
The second, coincidentally, is another 60's song by a "rival" rock n roll band because today I got a bit messy with some black ink whilst printing on lino and have given myself a temporary zebra tattoo because I thought it would come off. Appears not. So, I thought I was very witty choosing this for today's song. Here's "Paint it, Black."

And here's my interpretation of Paint it Black. Sorry for the bad picture but do you know how hard and awkward it is trying to take a selfie of your own arm?

Sail a Laughing Piano

Okay, so my favourite band is Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner is the lead singer of that band. One of the songs on his solo album for the film "Submarine" is today's song because I felt that this needed recognition:

I have no life. Did this on paint today, because of the lyric in the song that goes "And you'd better bring a change of clothes, so we can sail our laughing piano."
Taking lyrics literally... and yes, I know the photo editing is amazing.
Anyway, here's "Hiding Tonight."

Love this film, by the way. Great soundtrack obviously.

Getting Caught in the Rain

If you like pina coladas... and getting caught in the rain...

So other than getting caught in the rain today was a great day for me! Started off with a lazy Saturday morning (and early afternoon) then went down to Portobello and watched some great live music at Acklam Village Market for free, I really recommend going there if you're a live music fan. So today's song is actually by the person who I saw performing and was really good! Even better live than on the recording, I'd say! Really liked the band that played along with him as well, The Missing Pieces.
And here's the link to Acklam Village Market's website.

Juxtaposition

I used a big word in the title. Not bad, eh?

Anywho I was thinking deep thoughts (feeling very clever at the moment, won't last long) about how much I love playing sad or really dramatic songs on the ukulele, because it's such a cheerful, lighthearted instrument and playing songs like Eye of the Tiger and Hallelujah amuses me. Perhaps more than it should. And that's where the idea for today's song came from!
Here's another great song which actually sounds surprisingly good on the uke as well as with Jake Bugg's beautiful picking on the guitar.

Dustland Fairytale

Why hello there!

So today's song is a bit random, posting it purely because I think it's such a beautiful tune and the lyrics tell a nice little story...
Also, it's been stuck in my head all day. Can't complain, though :)
Hope you like it!

Welcome

English Summers

So, welcome to this new blog where I will try to post a song for every day. To kick off,  here's a song reflecting the English summer. Hopefully it'll get better before the holidays!
Just a note, it's by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, there's a small mistake in the artist's name on the YouTube video.
